Great news for Utah hunters - a recent population survey showed an increase in Utah's Mule Deer populaton, and it's the healthiest its been since the 90's. Utah State wildlife managers have raised the total number of general season hunting permits for the 2015 season in an attempt to control Utah's increasing mule deer population. This fall, there will be 2,250 more hunters that will be able to get a permit, and the total number of general season deer hunting permits for 2015 is 87,050, compared to 84,800 in 2014, which is an increase of 2.6%.
"Utah's deer herds are in the best shape they've been in since the early 1990s," said Justin Shannon, big game manager for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR).
Recent estimates show a statewide population of 355,600 mule deer, which is up from an estimated 332,900 after the 2013 deer hunts. Biologists believe about 84 percent of does and 82 percent of fawns made it through 2014, helping increase the overall population of Mule Deer in the state of Utah.
